Apple has added Low-Latency extensions (LL-HLS) to the HTTP Live Streaming protocol that combine the quality and scalability of HLS with a stream delay of two seconds or less.

LL-HLS  protocol is available to everyone using iOS 14, tvOS 14, watchOS 7 and macOS.

KWIKmotion live streaming delivery now supports LL-HLS on all iOS devices.  iOS users will notice less latency while live streaming their favorite shows.

Here are the most important changes Apple announced for LL-HLS :

  • Replacing HTTP/2 Push with Preloading Hinting
  • Generating CMAF in reference tools
  • Faster rendition switching
  • Elimination of HLS_Report
  • Adding signaling of gaps in part and rendition reports
